"I Am A Rational Maximizer"

Give me one example in your busy life where you could say you are being a "rational maximizer". A short paragraph will do.

After school today, I had a golf practice scheduled at Ute Creek that would have gone for two hours and is a 20-minute drive each way. That is a two hour and 40 minute committment. However, I maximized this time by practicing alone at a golf course that is only 10 minutes away and this gave me an opportunity to focus on what I needed to work on. I efficiently practiced for one hour, and as a result, I had an hour and twenty minutes of time that would otherwise not have been available. I was able to use this time to work on my non-profit organization.

This year i made a decision to play for a new hockey team. This was a rational decision that maximizes my time and money as the new ring is 15 minutes closer to me. Though 15 minutes is a small amount of time, making two trips a day four times a week will add up fast. I will have more time at home, and with gas prices as they are, the money i save will be significant.

The other day I had to take my sister to cheerleading practice and then pick my brother up from football. I could have gone home before getting my brother, but I didn't because I would have had to leave right away and it would have wasted gas. I was a rational maximizer because I saved gas (and money) by not making an unnecessary trip.

My brother and I both drive and since we have the same schedules everyday (school then practice) we decided to carpool this year. Not only does it save gas, but it saves time. On days my brother drives, we get to school five minutes faster becuase he drives so fast. On days I drive, we save gas money because I dont accelerate quickly and stop fast like he does. It all evens out!

When organizing my schedule for this year, there was some complications in balancing out which classes to take. I was hoping that i would get into music theory this year, but unfortunately, ofcourse, my schedule had no room for the class. Also, I had an unnecessary time release during a block that had no classes I wanted to take. So, it took matters into my own hands and talked to Mr. ellison about taking an independent study of the course. It worked out, and now i have a great schedule that i wouldn't want to change for any reason. I'm so glad that I made the effort to get what I wanted.

I was short on some school supplies and decided to quickly make a list and go to the nearby Safeway in order to get them. It was close by, so I figured that I could save some time by going there. Unfortunately, the measley supplies I bought cost me $40.00 and change, so I wasn't pleased. However, even though I maximized my time, I had minimized my savings by not planning ahead and going to a Wal-Mart that was 15 minutes farther away. But, I learned that it's important to plan ahead, and in that way, I rationally maximized.

I use the computer for a lot of my homework, but one of the problems is that my computer is very slow. To be a rational maximizer, I bring other homework over to the computer and work on that. This way, I can still be productive even when I am waiting for my computer to start up. I save time this way.

Our school gets out every day at 2:23(except if you have a time release.) After school i have to be in longmont to work by 2:30. They allow you to be a little late but not by much. It's nearly impossible to be there on time. To save time i make sure i'm completly ready to leave by the time the last bell rings, and i try to get to school early enough to get a parking spot close to the front of lot so that i can get out faster. This usually gets me to work in pretty good time.

Today, I had to mow two lawns and complete a decent amount of homework. There was also a tennis match I could compete in. I knew that the tennis would take me to around 6 p.m. and that would leave little time to mow,and also put the mowing at risk due to afternoon thunderstorms. I decided, based on the information I had, to skip the match and instead play in the matches on Friday and Saturday. This enabled me to do all three important things and it allowed for more time in between.

Usually I get a variety of homework, some being quick and simple and some long and difficult. I maximize my time by doing my quick and simple homework on the bus, so that I have more time for the difficult stuff when I get home. I save time, and I get to have more free time after school.

Last year I had PE right before lunch. By not changing from PE clothes to my regular clothes for the rest of the day, I was able to leave a tiny bit before the lunch bell rang. This enabled me to get to my car and pull it up front before any of the mad chaos of the parking lot started and also was able to pick up my friends leaving the building before anyone had made it to their cars. I saved my friends time and was rational maximizer because we were always the first ones in line at lunch making for longer time to eat, relax, and we were never late to class!

This year, I decided not to play competitive soccer. Instead, I tried my luck at track and field. By making this switch, I looked at some varibles. first, there was a cost savings of $700 instead of $120 and I decided to save that extra money. Next, three was the time factor. I had to drive to practice, which took an hour. (And my car gets average gas milage) Track practice was at school, so thre was no commute time, leaving me extra time to earn some money. Finally, I maxumized my utility by placing in almost every race. My soccer team had a rough season.

I am a rational maximizer when I shop at whole foods. Like with most of the stuff they sell there, Celiacs have to pay through the nose for gluten-free products. I have to carefully compare the number of items in each box to the price per box in order to maximize the food I'm getting for my dollar.

This year I have a time release during block 2 and b lunch. Even though I live less than 2 miles from the school it would be a waste of my time and gas to go home during both. So I decided to go home during time release and to stay at school during lunch in order to maximize my time.

I work at a gym most days of the week. When I have spare time at work I’m free to do homework and can even work out. I’ve learned to get all my work related responsibilities done in an efficient and timely fashion. Now I have time to do my homework and workout while on the job.

Usually when i come home from a long day at school, cross country practice, and piano on some days, i'm extremely tired. I know that if I sit down straight away to do homework, I will most likely be stuck reading the same page over and over again without actually absorbing anything. To maximize my time, I eat and take a small nap. This gives me some of my energy back and I can finish my homework better and more efficiently opposed to doing it when i'm on the verge of falling asleep.

Megan Lang said...

Today I got home from a cross country meet/ practice feeling very energized still from the race experience. Instead of sitting down and relaxing when I got home, I decided to take advantage of my energy and practice my violin. Then, when I got tired I ate lunch, which restored me enough to finish my practice time and to complete my history homework. Once I got tired of that, I took a break and showered so that I was ready to finish my economics and bio homework all before dinner! By working when I had the greatest amount of energy I was able to stay focused better and therefore accomplished more in a shorter period of time.

Yesterday I played in a tennis match, had to eat lunch, and finish homework all before my shift at work started. So I decided to take my homework with me while I picked up lunch and head to work 45 minutes early. By doing so I was able to eat lunch, and finish my homework all before my shift started. If I had not done so I would have spent more time eating lunch and not enough time working on my homework. So when I left work at 1 a.m. I had ate lunch and finished my homework all before my shift had started and am free to do what I want to do on Sunday.

I am a rational maximizer because i carpool to soccer practice. Therefore, I don't have to drive to soccer practice everyday.

I was a rational maximizer when I was asked what time I would like to tutor on Sunday. I asked if 6:20 would work out alright and they thought it was an odd time but I was trying to be as efficient as possible. Since I had something that ended at 6 and it took 20 min. to get to the house I tutor at, I decided to go straight there because I live far away so otherwise I would have added at least another 30 min. to the task.

Last friday, I had accidentally scheduled 2 babysitting jobs, much to my dismay. One had 3 kids- more kids means more money. The other only had 1 kid- but this family calls me a lot and i feel most dedicated to them. Instead of refusing either job, I took them both- I picked up the single kid first and took them to the other house. It worked perfect because i got paid even more and the kids had an even better time playing with each other!

This morning I was a rational maximizer. Last night I forgot my camera at my friends house, and this morning I had practice less than 5 minutes away. Instead of making two seperate trips, I went straight to my friends house after my practice. This saved me at least thirty minutes of my day and probably a few dimes in gas as well.

Last summer I had to make the decision between playing competitive softball or just rec leaugue. Although competitive softball might have made me better, by not playing I saved money and a lot of time. This left me room for my job and time to hang out with my friends. Rec league softball was a good decision because it still kept me in shape for the upcoming softball season and wasn't as stressful as a competitive league might have been.

After school on Thursday, I had a tennis match that was supposed to last until 6. During that day, I figured out a plan to get home after tennis and complete my homework right after the match so I would have time to relax and have dinner. However, the match was rained out. So instead of killing time until 6, like I had planned, I went home and completed my homework and was done before 6. Because of my decision to finish my homework in the free time I had, I had much more time to relax and take the night off.

I have a serious back problem and require physical thearpy a few times a week. Since my sceduale is so full already, with sports and school, I took a time release 8th block to maximize my time. I did not have time to go to PT after school becasue of football; however, with this free block, I could go before football and then still have time for homework after football.

I am a rational maximizer because today I went to a baseball game with my parents and their friends. They live close to us so i suggested that we carpool there since my family has a car large enough for all six of us. This allowed them to save money on gas and on the fee for parking. It also helped the environment because one less car means less pollution.

Every week I go down to Arvada to play in a youth symphony. Instead of making an hour and a half drive to and from by myself, I carpool with two other members of the orchestra who go to Niwot as well. Not only do each of us save money on gas but we get to socialize (instead of being alone), or we have the ride to work on homework.

For lunch breaks this year I chose to drive home, which is less that a mile, so I can eat. This saves me money on lunch. Instead of spending my money on going out, I can eat at home for "free".

JCrenshaw80 said...

On Friday I decided to drive home for lunch. This saved me a couple bucks that I could then blow on something else and also allowed me to eat a healthier meal.

Cerahkim said...

My church is 45 minutes away, therefore my family decided it would be a good idea to only take one car, rather than two cars to save on gas. Even though all our of schedules are different. We're able to save money on gas! yay!

The other day, I had to practice and do homework. I decided to do both at the same time by practicing for 10 minutes and then reading my textbook for 5 minutes and then switching them off. I only spent 1 and 1/2 hours practicing/reading, and I got way more read and done because I knew that I only had a small amount of time to do what I wanted to do. I maximized my efforts for short bursts of time, and was able to accomplish more. When I was done, I was able to do whatever I wanted to instead of spending the whole night doing homework.

I was a "rational maximizer" when configuring my schedule this school year. A chemistry class I was interested in was offered during both 5th block and 8th block, so I had the choice of either taking the class during 5th block or 8th block and a time release during the other. I chose to take 5th block as a time release because I work better at night and at home, and a 5th block time release would allow me to stay up later doing homework while still getting the proper amount of sleep. In addition, since I have soccer everyday after school, I would have lost valuable time going home and coming back to the school during 8th block, thus getting less work done. By deciding to take a 5th block time release instead of an 8th block time release, I am able to work more efficiently and save time.

My brother Cody and i both go to football practice everyday. Instead of both driving and spending money on gas we carpool. In the end we save twice as much money each on gas.

Just the other day I had to work until 5pm and then at 5 30 i was going to help a friend with a project. Both these places were close to each other, so instead of going back to my house then leave shortly after, i worked for an extra 20min and went to my friends project. So i spent my time in a better way and saved gas.

One example in which I have been a rational maximizer is when I decided to attend my tennis practice after school or attend my part time Job. I decided that I should attend my part time job for just this time.

I was scheduled with an unexpected time release fifth block this year. Instead of taking advantage of the extra time to sleep in, I choose to drive my sisters to school and do homework in the library or speak to my teacher about my independent study. While my cost might be feeling tired in eighth block, I am being a rational maximizer by completing tasks I need to get done before nine o'clock a.m. (like finishing my economics blogging) instead of using valuable time in the afternoon when i have homework and chores to attend to.

This year I have decided to switch hockey teams. For the old team I played out of a rink that was approximately 45 minuts away, but now playing out of the new rink I now drive only 30 minutes. When making the drive several times a week the gas and time adds up. So saving the 15 minutes will rationally maximize my time and money spent on the sport I love. But not only is this change best for my time and money but as well for my personal well-being. With this move comes better hockey experience, new friends, and better exposure to move my career to the next level. As a whole this change is a HUGE rational maximizer for me!

My dad and I generally split groceries between us. We generally save time because I work at target. I'll grab some groceries and get the little 10% discount for working there. Saves time and money.

Last year during my time relseases I did nothing at all. I just sat around and read worthless books, and talked to people. When i got home every night i realzed how much homework I had, and regretted not MAXIMIZING the time in my TRP to complete my homework. This year I have been using my TRP more efficiently, and I usually finish my homeowkr, and I have time to complete other needed tasks at home. I have learned to use my time wisely, and make good use of it.

I have pretty much decided that I'm not going to do Advanced Drama this year durring school. Last year I noticed that the amount of fun I was having greatly dropped durring Adv. Drama. So By making this rational decision I will be able to improve my utility...a lot.

Usually I have a ton of homework at night, and I want to be able to finish it as soon as I possibly can. However, I also have to eat dinner and talk to my friends. My parents also expect me to start looking at colleges, so my nightly schedule to to do my homework while eating dinner while I'm on the phone and have a college website up on my computer which I glance to from time to time. Doing all of this makes everything I do easier and done quicker.

I feel that I am a rational maximizer when I had to run a bunch of errands. I made sure to try and go to places that were close to each other. For example, I chose to go to Safeway and Office Max instead of Office Depot which is much further away. I also needed gas, and planned to go to the safeway pump to save time on my route.

I play football and have practice every day after school. I was a rational maximizer today when I decided to park close to the athletic room entrance rather than the main entrance of the school. I had clean practice laundry that I needed to get after school because the athletic locker room is to remain locked until later in the day. Since I arrived early to school and the extra three minutes of walking were expendable I saved myself valuable time after school when running out to my car only took one minute rather than five.
By doing this I was not late to practice and did not have to run.

After school, I go to my volleyball practice then I have to wait for my brother to get off from his football practice. While waiting for him to get off of practice, instead of sleeping or going home (only to return 45 minutes later) I stay and wait for him as I finish my homework. By doing this, I save an extra trip to school and with that time that I save, I can finish more homework which allows me to get more sleep when I get home, which makes me a rational maximizer. I consider the opportunity cost to be really good for me, because I can get done with my homework early and get more sleep.

kevinpaterra said...

This year I am taking 3 AP courses. I also play football which is a considerable time commitment as well. To maximize my time to balance school/football and my leisure time, I scheduled two time release perioeds for blocks one and two. This way, I can complete my homework in the morning and have more time after football.

I live about 25 minutes away from Niwot and about 10 minutes away from Longmont High School. On Thursday, I'm expected to go support both the soccer team and the football team at their first home games. Instead of driving home at 2:20 (arriving at 2:40 and leaving at 3:10--30 minutes) and coming back at 3:30 for the soccer game, some of the squad is going to go do something around Niwot-to save gas and time. After the soccer game, over at around 5:00, we are all carpooling to go out for dinner then straight to the football game at Longmont. This is rational maximization because we're transporting everyone to three destinations without having their parents/siblings having to shuttle them around. This also prevents the cheerleaders from being late.

Most of the time, I have a significant amount of homework to do each night. I try to do the long, harder problems and assignments during my Time Release so that when I get home I can spend less time on homework and more time on things that I enjoy doing. To increase my efficiency, I usually try to take a 30-minute break after school to give my brain a break from school before I start homework. These things make me a rational maximizer because I’m saving time and I’m increasing my utility.

I have a time release thrid block and in order to maximize my time I went home to complete some of my homework and to eat lunch. By doing so, I conserved money by not eating out, and I was also able to save time by using my time release to complete school work so that I had more time afterschool to do other work.

I try to shower and eat breakfast in the morning at a faster and more efficient rate, so that I can sleep more before I have to leave.

I have time releases first and fifth blocks instead of classes because of my continual habit of falling asleep in class last year. This year I have been well rested before going to class and am not losing any education simply because I can stay awake in class.

This year I have time release during blocks two and six, the middle of the day. Instead of wasting time by going home to do homework, I stay at school and do it. This also saves time for after school, I can do other things instead of wasting time on homework.

by choosing to read hamlet in your class, i was thusly able to free up already used time by not having to read it then. it’s boggling, i know, but it saved nearly twenty minutes i used to nap the previous day.

This year, I made a decision to do all my homework right when I get home. Before, I would do all the fun stuff first and do my homework at night, causing me to sleep later and be really tired the next day. By doing my homework early, I have more time to relax in the evening, sleep, and have more energy the next day. Now my time is not fully wasted.

I work...a lot. My boss needs me there about 16 hours a week, and all of that takes place within three days. Because of the amount I am working, I have little time to hang out with my friends except Sunday afternoons. But because I am working so much, I can eventually ask for a weekend off, and spend some of the money I have earned with my friends. This makes me a rational maximizer, because I am trading my time for money, which I can later use for entertainment later, instead of spending money I don't have right now...

I was a rational maximizer when I decided to have time releases at times during the day when I would get work done. the more work I get done at school, the less I have to do at home. This makes it easier to do other things after school, like play baseball, sleep, and get invovled with other things.

This past saaturday my cross country team has a meet, which i was unable to run in. I could have wasted time going up there with them watching people run and then doing my own workout, but instead I maximized my time by simply running around longmont.
